“Break the elbow. Then, break the other elbow.”
If you have ever wanted to know how to throw down an attacker, step-by-step instructions were delivered this weekend at the Dragon Boat & Asian Festival at the Riverfront Plaza.
The free event began early Saturday morning, as the dragon boat races opening ceremonies kicked things off around 8. Many of the paddlers are amateurs, having only a few practice runs before competing, but some teams take it semi-seriously, discussing opponents’ winning strategies after each race. Show up early to snag a prime spot under one of the shade trees along the river.
There are food booths on the upper level of the Riverfront Plaza. Offerings include Thai, Vietnamese, Indian, and Chinese food, along with ice cream, ices, and sausage and peppers. There’s bubble tea and fruit smoothies.
No martial arts demonstrations are scheduled for Sunday, but there will be musical performances, Tibetan dance, Japanese drumming, and more.
The Asian Festival goes from 10-3 on Sunday, with most events wrapping up by 2pm. The dragon boat racing resumes around 9 Sunday morning and ends about 3pm.
