In the last few days I (1) have seen someone — not anonymously — freaking out on their relative’s Facebook page over the socialism they think will take over the land if T$%&p does not get re-elected, and (2) spied a sticker placed on a sign at the Hartford-Wethersfield line claiming that a vote for T$@&p will stop communism.

Nevermind for a second that any socialism or communism that allegedly exists would have popped up while T^$%p held office for four years already, which makes one wonder how anyone would expect him to magically stop it during a second term. There’s a basic logic problem right there.

But I don’t argue with people who are fascists and/or out of touch with reality. When I see someone screaming in a park, I pivot and walk away from them. I believe in doing the same when folks essentially do the same thing on the Internet.

That’s not the point I need to make though. If communism/socialism (in the way that the T*#$p supporters use the words) is people looking out for one another, sharing resources, making sure we all have enough to eat, I can’t see that as something to stop. There are at least three free pantries in the West End alone, all of which popped up in the last few years. There is another such pantry in Asylum Hill. At the Free Center on New Britain Avenue and Coolidge Street, one was just installed. Unlike some other food distribution systems that require people stand in long lines on specific days, these pantries are self-serve and always open.

We’ve seen more demand, not less, for food pantries in the last year. What was that greatness we were promised a return to?
