Normally, this is not the kind of thing I would go out of my way to see. Skeletons? Yes. General Halloween scenes? Yes. Scarecrows? Sounds too cutesy.
Wanting a change of scenery, but feeling obligated to stay close to home thanks to the pandemic, I decided to take a little walk. By “little,” I mean a 10+ mile roundtrip.
Seeing Shirley Chisholm’s words woven into one of the exhibits was worth my feet feeling a bit tired at the end of the day.
This is the 25th year that scarecrows have been on display around Old Wethersfield. Considering that they have already been outside for a few weeks, the scarecrows are holding up well.
For those who have never been to this (or any) part of Wethersfield, just aim for Main Street and Hartford Avenue, then start looking around.
There’s no specific entry or exit, as the scarecrows can be seen in front of many homes, businesses, and organizations along Main Street.
There’s also no charge to wander and look at the displays.
All displays needed to be “family-oriented,” so if you’re hoping for very creepy, gory scenes, you’ll have to adjust your expectations.
You have through November 1, 2020 to view the scarecrows. Respect others’ freedom to stay alive: wear a mask.
When you’re done with the seasonal display, there are a few other places nearby to visit:
- Wethersfield Village Cemetery and Ancient Burying Ground
- Wethersfield Cove
- Heirloom Market
- Main Street Creamery & Cafe
Consider bringing a picnic blanket and grabbing your snack to go. Outdoor seating, while present, is limited.

Thanks for this. I love these outdoor displays. I don’t think I will get to Wethersfield to see these Scarecrows but of course love the one hanging off the lamp post. That one nears art. I was in Manchester on Thursday and walked around Main Street to see their yearly display of Scarecrows. Loved every second of it. I somehow always end up over there this time of year. All of the ones in Manchester were also non-gory and just plain fun. Don’t know how many would scare a crow but a old bird like me was certainly entertained.
