They used to put these posts in places to determine distance from the post office and thus determine the price of postage. Four mile road in West Hartford has one of these posts and is named for its distance.
But, I feel like they weren’t doing that in 1945. So, who knows? There was one just like this on Ansonia street near my old apartment.
