It’s the time of the season when creativity runs amok and maybe slightly unhinged in Old Wethersfield.
The Scarecrows Along Main event — also called Scarecrows On Main — is happening now.
The decorations are all outdoors or viewable from the sidewalk, and free.
They are at their best when truly weird.
The first thing I saw when I got off the bus was someone’s rendition of Barbenheimer (photos above) and there is a lot more to this sculptural masterpiece than what I could capture here.
You have to look up and from multiple angles. The same scarecrows viewed from one side and almost directly underneath look like they’re giving a salute, but from across the street, they’re obviously holding onto their umbrellas.
Even with the presence of cats and scarecrows, they couldn’t manage to keep the birds out.
A giant bird holding two other birds feels especially aggressive.
As does another meta scene of a bird casually reading about crows.
It’s not all attempted murder and body bags.
There are the standard messages of kindness.
And sometimes just a very particular vibe.
There’s the musically inspired . . .
. . . and a display that features music.
(If you have not watched Wednesday, stop what you’re doing to view the scene this display is referencing)
You’ll find tradition . . .
. . . and minions (not to be confused with a minyan).
A bit of history
A bite of history
COOKIES!
Go see what treasure you can find in Old Wethersfield through October 31, 2023.
The 53W bus makes several stops there, Monday-Saturday.
On Sundays, take the 47 bus to the stop by Wells Road; walk down Wells Road until it becomes Main Street, and the first display is about a 10-minute walk from that bus stop. If you want to see who made what, look at the labels by the displays.
