What makes this list? Events that I would either attend or recommend to a good friend.

  • STREET PROJECT: *One chance to catch this film at Real Art Ways* The Street Project is a documentary film about people who have identified a problem and worked toward making a better reality, and you can see how this has played out in Arizona, New York, and yes, Copenhagen. After the  film, a panel discussion will explore how here in Connecticut we can embrace change to design the type of lives we want to be living. On that panel: Dr. Mary Donegan, Grace Yi, and Kerri Ana Provost; Doug Hausladen will moderate. Filmmaker Jennifer Boyd will also be present to talk about her film. This is on September 1, 2022 with film starting at 7:15 PM — admission $8.
  • LION KING: Watch the 2019 version of The Lion King in Bushnell Park near the Pump House on September 2, 2022 at sunset. Free.
  • CHILDREN OF THE CORN: Or, for something less wholesome, watch this classic on September 3, 2022 on Constitution Plaza at 7:30 PM. Free. Bring snacks and something to sit on.
  • SUNSET SOUNDS: Hang out in the Butler-McCook garden (396 Main Street) with a picnic and listen to the Haneef N. Nelson Quintet from 6-8 PM on September 8, 2022. Free.
  • HARTBEAT MUSIC FESTIVAL: This year, the festival of local and regional bands spans two days: 5-9 PM on September 9 and 10:30 AM – 9 PM on September 10, 2022. This is at the Riverfront. Free.
  • SALSA SOCIAL: Pratt Street turns into a dance party. Show up, dance. It’s free. September 9, 2022 from 5-8 PM.
  • IT: Watch chapter one of It (2017) on Constitution Plaza, September 10, 2022 at 7:30 PM. Bring something to sit on, or, just float. Free.
  • ARBOR ST BLOCK PARTY:  Open studios for 30 and 56 Arbor Street means doors will be open for a bookstore, yoga studio, and a few dozen more places on September 11, 2022 from 11 AM – 4 PM.
  • ENTANGLED & INGESTED: Dr. Katharine A. Owens is phenomenal and I can’t say it enough: go see her art. The opening for this exhibit at the Charter Oak Cultural Center is on September 15, 2022, 5:30-7:30 PM. Dr. Owen’s artist statement: “Plastic is an environmentally destructive substance that since the late 1950s has become an inescapable part of our daily lives. I research the environmental impact of plastics, training communities to collect it on shorelines and report the results to local policymakers. As an interdisciplinary researcher and artist, I’m both obsessed with and revolted by plastic. Entangled and Ingested (Laist 1997) is a series of forty-six life-sized portraits of species harmed by plastic pollution, created by hand-sewing unrecyclable film plastic onto canvas. Pieces over eighteen feet are created collaboratively with the public. The Entangled and Ingested project traces the ways film plastics inundate our lives, linking these creatures to our limitless consumption and us to their survival.” Free admission.
  • THE HOT SHOP: Mobile Glassblowing Studios is setting up temporary shop in the Wadsworth Atheneum’s outdoor court, where visitors can watch glass work demonstrations. Free with museum admission; Hartford residents receive free admission to the museum. This is September 16, 2022, 1-2:30 PM
  • E.T.: E.T. is 40! Watch it at Cinestudio from September 16 – 22, 2022. General admission is $10.
  •  PEOPLE UNDER THE STAIRS: Personally, I’m still damaged from watching this repeatedly with friends when it first came out, but maybe you have the stomach for it. This will be at Constitution Plaza on September 17, 2022 at 7:30 PM. Bring a snack and a seat. Free.
  •  TRAIN TO BUSAN: The final Spooky Popcorn film for September. . .but there’s more to come in October. This movie begins at 7:30 PM on September 24, 2022 on Constitution Plaza. Free.
  •  TREE TOUR: Take a free tree tour of Elizabeth Park, led by arborist John Kehoe. Meet in front of the Pond House for a 10 AM start on September 29, 2022.
