Here is your curated event calendar for May. There were many other offerings, but you know the policy:
1. It needs to sound interesting enough for me to attend or recommend to a friend, and
2. The venue can’t have dodgy Covid protocols.

ADD TO CALENDAR

  • GOOD TROUBLE: Steve Thornton will be sharing some of the stories from his book, Good Trouble: A Shoeleather History of Nonviolent Direct Action. Expect to learn about the more interesting local history from this engaging speaker. This virtual talk (May 4 at noon) is free, but registration is required

  • VARSITY GAY LEAGUE SPRING KICKBALL:  This is for the grown folks, LGBTQ+. Season begins May 8, 2021. Games are at Hyland Park and there are fees, but if you’re not sure you’re ready to commit, there is a free game on May 1, 2021 from 4-6 PM. Their current Covid protocols include wearing face coverings, among other things that should be super obvious, like not sharing water bottles with other players.

  • LEST WE FORGET: Cedar Hill Cemetery, in collaboration with the Hartford Medical Society, is offering an online program about infectious diseases — cholera infantum, the bloody flux, ague, putrid fever, filth disease, consumption — that impacted people in the last few centuries. Nothing like a little history to put our current situation in perspective. It’s free, but register to reserve your ticket. This event takes place on May 11, 2021 from 12-1:30 PM.

  • FREE MARKET:  Need clothes? Household goods? See if they have what you’re looking for. This event is in-person, and though outside, masks will be required because, you know, basic respect for other people’s lives. This is on May 15, 2021 from 4-7 PM at 460 New Britain Avenue. Contact htfdrrfm@gmail.com with any questions.

  • RIDE THE BUS: Listen, this sort of counts as an event. Starting May 31, CTtransit is free on the weekends, along with Memorial Day and the Monday following Independence Day, through Labor Day this year. Some of us have not been traveling over the last year and change, so riding the bus will feel like a change of scenery. Not ready to be around a lot of people? Take the bus somewhere for an outdoor adventure.
