March 1

  • Hartford Police Department is hosting a public Comstat meeting, which is a chance to learn about current crime trends in the city. This begins at 5:30 pm at the police department (253 High Street).

 

  • Civic Trivia: Come show off your knowledge of Hartford’s history at Red Rock (corner of Capitol Avenue and Lawrence Street), 6-7:30 pm. Play as an individual or on a team of up to four players. One cellphone needed per team. There is a $10 registration fee; registration is required.

 

  • Harvesting Stones: Charter Oak Cultural Center (21 Charter Oak Avenue) will be hosting a screening of this film followed by Q&A with the filmmaker. They describe this film as: “It’s the 1890s. Connecticut Yankees are selling their rocky farms, Jews are fleeing Czarist Russia, and a Jewish back-to-the-land movement sees turning shtetl refugees into farmers as the best way for them become productive, self-sufficient Americans. Add some funding from the German-Jewish philanthropist Baron Maurice de Hirsch and you have the recipe for a Jewish agricultural revival that ultimately settled a thousand Jewish families in rural Connecticut. Using historic footage, home movies and Yiddish-language farm journals as well as testimony from participants, including survivors of Russian pogroms and the Holocaust, this ground-breaking documentary presents the fascinating but unknown story of the American Jewish pioneers who established farms and mini-agricultural resorts in eastern Connecticut.” This free event begins at 7 pm.

 

  • The Polish National Home (60 Charter Oak Avenue) will be hosting Thursday Night Swing Dance with Hartford Underground, every Thursday. Lessons are from 7-8 pm, with a free beginner lesson from 8-8:30 in the basement.

 

  • Into the Woods: Trinity College students will be performing Stephen Sondheim’s musical in Austin Arts Center at 7:30 pm. This is free and open to the public, but call (860) 297-2199 as tickets are required.

 

March 2

  • Multimodal Meetup: Hang out with others who get to where they’re going by bike, bus, or foot. Or skateboard. Or scooter. You get the picture. Meet at Donde Julio (83 Park Street), 7-9 am. No cost to attend, but bring money to cover your own breakfast.

  • Free admission to Connecticut Historical Society‘s (1 Elizabeth Street) galleries, 9 am – 5 pm. From 10-1 there will be Dr. Seuss-themed activities for the children.

 

  • Encountering the American Gothic: obsessed with Edward Gorey? Take part in small group discussions about his writing and art at the Wadsworth Atheneum, 10 am – 12 pm. Email faculty@wadsworthatheneum.org to register. Free admission.

 

  • Syllable: Melissa Wyse, Michael Jefferson II, Kate Monica, and Geoffrey Craig will be reading their creative writing at Little River Restoratives (405 Capitol Avenue), 6:30-8:30 pm. No cover.

  • Jeff Fuller and friends perform as part of the Baby Grand Jazz series at Hartford Public Library, 3-4 pm. This is a free event in the Center for Contemporary Culture.

  • An Evening with Richard Kurin: Kurin, the Smithsonian’s Distinguished Scholar and Ambassador at Large, will give a free lecture at CHS (1 Elizabeth Street), 5:30 – 7 pm. They say “Richard Kurin will show how artifacts from the Smithsonian Institution’s collections tell the story of America. Some of the items he covers are iconic – George Washington’s portrait, the Star-Spangled Banner, and Dorothy’s ruby slippers from the Wizard of Oz are well-known examples.” RSVP rsvp@chs.org or by calling 860-236-5621 ext. 238.

 

  • HYPE Budgets & Barbells Bootcamp: This will be held at MetroHartford Alliance (31 Pratt Street, 5th floor), 6-8 pm. They say: “The evening will begin with a 45 minutes session on budgeting, featuring expert Magdalena G. Johndrow, Associate Financial Advisor at Farmington River Financial Group, who will guide you through creating and maintain budget that works for you. After budgeting, attendees will work on their physical fitness with a 45 minute bootcamp workout at WIP Fitness, a boutique fitness studio offering functional high intensity boot camp classes. An expert WIP coach will lead attendees through a challenging workout suitable for all fitness levels. Dinner will be provided, and all attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop for the budgeting session. Comfortable clothing suitable for a workout is required for the fitness session.” Registration is required; there is a $25 registration fee for those who are not HYPE members.

 

  • Trivia Night at Hooker Brewery (140 Huyshope Avenue), 6-9 pm.

 

  • Stand-Up Comedy Open Mic: Sign up begins at 7 pm; there are 35 spaces on the list and the show will start as soon as those spots fill. There is a $5 cover charge. Performers receive a ticket for one free drink. Got all that? This is at Sea Tea Comedy Theater (15 Asylum Street).

March 6

  • The Entrepreneurial Center (260 Girard Avenue) is offering a workshop on how to start a small business, 9:30 am – 12 pm. Register by contacting entrectr@hartford.edu or call 860.768.5681. This is free.

 

  • The Hartford Public Library’s Dwight Branch (7 New Park Avenue) is offering a free rock painting workshop for adults. They’ll provide the rocks and paints. 11 am – 12 pm.

 

  • Health in Caribbean Hartford Forum: This is panel discussion with Associate Professor of Anthropology Adriana Garriga-Lopez of Kalamazoo College in Michigan and Associate Professor of History Mariola Espinosa of University of Iowa will focus on public health in the Caribbean. This will take place in the Reese Room of Smith House on the Trinity College campus at 6 pm. Free and open to the public.

 

  • Upward Canvas: Student exhibition at Upward Hartford (20 Church Street, mezzanine), 6-8 pm. When you enter the building, take the stairs to the left. Free.

 

  • Drop by ArtSpace Gallery (555 Asylum Avenue) to hear Angela Luna and Klokwise perform. This will be followed by book readings by Chris Grosso and Amy LaBossiere. Ramon Morant and Joe Palmer will create music later in the evening. This starts at 6:30 pm.

 

  • Raising Kids with Character: Dr. Amy Alama will give a presentation on “raising healthy children with a strong moral compass and an ability to sustain meaningful relationships.” This free event at Watkinson School (180 Bloomfield Avenue) does require registration before March 2nd. 7-8:30 pm.

  • Drink Up!: Complimentary happy hour at Upward Hartford (20 Church Street, mezzanine level), 4-6 pm.

 

  • Get HYPEd: Do some networking and check out the awesome space that is Upward Hartford (20 Church Street, mezzanine), 5:30-8:30 pm. Free.

 

  • Edens Lost and Found…Chicago, City of the Big Shoulders: This film is described as weaving: “together the stories of a diverse group of its active and committed citizens including volunteers, professionals, students and community leaders — among them, the city’s then-mayor, Richard M. Daley. During his tenure, Chicago made a powerful commitment to open space with the creation of the 24-acre Millennium Park, and become a laboratory for green architecture with the award-winning City Hall Roof Garden and Green Roof Initiative. Together, their efforts helped reclaim pieces of Eden that had been lost to generations of apathy.” This is a fundraiser for Riverfront Recapture; general admission to the 5:30 pm event is $40. This is at Spotlight on Front Street.

 

  • Health in Caribbean Hartford Forum: Several speakers will talk about hurricanes and health care in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, migrant Caribbean and central American populations in Connecticut, and the use of trauma-informed services with Puerto Rican and other Caribbean communities. Discussions and workshops will follow these presentations. This event is free and open to the public, takes place in the Washington Room of Mather Hall, and begins at 6 pm.

 

  • MakeHartford Open House: check out the space, meet other makers, ask questions, learn about upcoming classes and events at MakeHartford (30 Arbor Street, #B7),  6:30-8:30 pm. Free.

March 8

  • Bomba-erobics: Work out to the beat of the bomba drum at Toivo (399 Franklin Avenue), 6-8 pm. There is a suggested donation of $5-15.

 

  • Spectra Wired Cafe (Kinsley Street and Columbus Boulevard) is hosting Sarah Rose, who’ll be performing Bossa Nova and Brazilian jazz, 6-8:30 pm. No Cover.

 

 

  • The Polish National Home (60 Charter Oak Avenue) will be hosting Thursday Night Swing Dance with Hartford Underground, every Thursday. Lessons are from 7-8 pm, with a free beginner lesson from 8-8:30 in the basement.

 

  • White Sun will be shown at Wadsworth Atheneum, 7 pm. This film is described: “The burial of an old man in a remote village threatens to fail because the quarreling family cannot overcome old traditions and political differences.” General admission: $9

 

  • Tainted Inc. (56 Arbor Street Suite310A) is hosting an all levels Hip Hop class, no experience necessary. Bring sneakers. It’s $20 to participate in this one-hour session that starts at 7 pm.

 

  • Twang Thursday: The Penniless Wild are playing at Hog River Brewery (1429 Park Street), 7-9 pm. Free.

March 9

  • Read It & Sleep: Every month, Charter Oak Cultural Center (21 Charter Oak Avenue) hosts this event that encourages young people to read. There will be snacks, Spring-themed art activities, and a book fair-style grab. Participants go home with free books. 7-8 pm. Free.

 

  • Cinestudio is screening Call Me By Your Name at 7:30 pm. The film’s description reads: “In a year when ‘sexual’ invariably seems to be followed by ‘abuse’ or ‘harassment,’ Call Me By Your Name is a reminder that sexuality can be a joyful, consensual experience.” General admission: $10.

March 10

  • Get some waffles and pancakes, topped off by maple syrup that was tapped in Hartford. This takes place in the Keney Park Pond House (383 Edgewood Street), 10 am – 1 pm. This breakfast is a kid-friendly, pay-what-you-can affair.

 

  • Free admission to the Wadsworth Atheneum, 10 am – 1 pm. You do not need to leave at 1 pm, just get there before that time if you want the free admission.

 

  • Community Day at Connecticut Science Center = ticket prices are $5 from 10 am – 5 pm today.

 

  • The Greater Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade steps off by the Connecticut State Capitol at 11 am, goes east on Capitol Avenue, north up Main Street, down Asylum Street, and then ends by the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch in Bushnell Park. Free.

 

 

  • Story + Soul: Coffee by Story + Soil, poetry by Brett Maddux. This free event will take place at Vasu Studio (56 Arbor Street, Suite 409), 1:30-3 pm.

 

  • Learn how techniques and approaches to flower design at Tainted (56 Arbor St, Ste 310A), 1-4 pm. The $75 registration fee covers: “a selection of seasonal flowers, use of specialty tools and materials, and a take home resource guide.

 

  • Drop by Toivo (399 Franklin Avenue) to learn how to set healthy boundaries for self-care and self-love. There is a $5-15 suggested donation for this workshop. 2-3:30 pm.

 

  • The Connecticut Historical Society (1 Elizabeth Street) is hosting “an open house to celebrate the Passing It On: Southern New England Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program exhibit. The exhibit, which presents the work of master teachers and students who work in a wide variety of ethnic and occupational traditional art forms, closes after March 10. The event will feature artist demonstrations by participants in the Apprenticeship Program, including wampum carvers Allen Hazard and Josh Carter, Tibetan weaver Tentso Sichoe, Tibetan painters Jampa Tsondue and Tsering Yangchen, and National Heritage Fellow Eldrid Arntzen, a Norwegian rosemaler (painting on wood). Performers will include National Heritage Fellow Kevin Doyle (Irish dance), Irish fiddler Dan Foster, and Mariachi Mexico Antiguo featuring apprentice Citlalli Hernandez. There will also be a book signing with the authors of Folk Masters: A Portrait of America, a new book about the National Heritage Fellows, traditional artists who have received this high distinction from the National Endowment for the Arts.” This free event is from 2-5 pm.   • The Testament will be shown at Spotlight (39 Front Street), 2 pm, as part of the Hartford Jewish Film Fest. This is described as: “Yoel, a dedicated historian, is leading a widely publicized legal battle against powerful forces concerning a brutal massacre of Jews in Austria during the Second World War. An influential family of industrialists on whose land the murder took place is planning to build a real estate project on it. Yoel suspects that their aim is to bury the incident for good, but has trouble finding the conclusive evidence that would stop the project. During his investigation, he examines classified testimonials from Holocaust survivors, and to his shock, finds a testimony given by his mother — a testimony he didn’t know existed — in which she confesses to a substantial secret from her past. As he starts conducting a double investigation, personal and scientific, he is trapped between walls of silence — on one side, denial of the Holocaust on the part of the Austrian villagers, and on the other, his own mother’s silence regarding her past. Driven by an unshakeable commitment to the truth, he decides to continue his investigations even at the cost of ruining his professional and personal life.” Also screening here at 2 pm is Harmonia, “a contemporary adaptation of the biblical tale of Abraham and Sarah set inside the inner sanctum of a symphony hall.” General admission: $12.

 

  • The Jan Jungden Trio performs as part of the Baby Grand Jazz series at Hartford Public Library, 3-4 pm. This is a free event in the Center for Contemporary Culture.

 

 

  • Listen to the Nat Reeves Jazz Trio give a free performance at Center Church (60 Gold Street), 4:30 pm. Reception follows.

 

  • At 4:30, two more films will be shown at Spotlight (39 Front Street) as part of the Hartford Jewish Film Fest. Bye Bye Germany is described as set in “Frankfurt, 1946. David Bermann and his friends have escaped the Nazi regime and are now dreaming of leaving for America. But how will they get the money in these tough post-war times?”  An Act of Defiance is described as capturing “a dark period in South Africa’s recent history, skillfully balancing a nail-biting political thriller with spectacular courtroom intrigue while paying tribute to the legendary figures who fought to end segregation and corruption in their country.” $12 admission.

 

  • at 7:30 pm, the documentary Itzhak will be screened at Spotlight (39 Front Street) as part of the Hartford Jewish Film Fest. This film is described: “If there’s anyone who personifies the resilience, the vision and ultimately the contribution of the Jewish people, it’s Itzhak Perlman. The violin is the chosen instrument of Perlman, the vehicle he has used to overcome his own challenges and express himself to the world. In Perlman and his music, we hear the story of obstacles and survival, we trace the path of the Jewish people from the chaos of Europe to the promise of Israel, we see the comfort of home and family and witness how humor and talent combine with discipline and drive.” $12 general admission.

March 12

  • Mayor Bronin delivers the 2018 State of the City address at 5 pm in Council Chambers at City Hall. Because this is possibly the hottest event of the year, overflow seating and video projection will be provided next door in the Hartford Public Library’s Center for Contemporary Culture.

 

  • Hartford’s City Council meets tonight. The public comment session begins at 6 pm; get there early to sign up. The official meeting begins at 7. This is in Council Chambers at Hartford City Hall. Bring your own popcorn.

 

  • Trivia Night at Hooker Brewery (140 Huyshope Avenue), 6-9 pm.

March 13

  • Poor People’s Campaign Art Building and Singing Potluck: Create banners and puppets during the day; sing and eat at night. This is a free event at Hartford Catholic Worker (18 and 26 Clark Street), 3-8 pm. Get out and be part of the community!

 

  • Opening reception for Draw a Hartford History Maker: A Black History Month Community Project. This is at the Albany Avenue branch of Hartford Public Library (1250 Albany Avenue), 6-8 pm. Free.

 

  • Upward Expression: open mic night at Upward Hartford (20 Church Street, mezzanine level). Sign up at 7 pm; performance at 7:30. Free.

March 14

  • Enough! National School Walkout: the seventeen minute-long walkout begins at 10 am. In the words of the organizers, this is a “response to the gun violence plaguing our schools and neighborhoods. We need action. Students and allies are organizing the national school walkout to demand Congress pass legislation to keep us safe from gun violence at our schools, on our streets and in our homes and places of worship.“

 

  • Connecticut Interfaith Conference on Drone Warfare: Listen to presentations and watch two films that explore these questions: “Why is the faith community concerned about drone warfare? Are civilians protected in drone warfare? What is the effect of drone warfare on drone operators? What does it mean to say ‘Kill one terrorist and create 10 more terrorists’?” Lunch is provided and registration is free. This is at the Hartford Seminary (77 Sherman Street).

As he is forced to take on the mounting pressure of family responsibility, his search for connection with an absent father leads him to dangerous roads.” General admission: $9. Reception at 6 pm.

March 15

  • Opening reception for Marilyn Parkinson Thrall’s ArtWalk Gallery exhibit, “The Dress/Memory and Metaphor.” This free event is 5:30-7:30 pm in the Hartford Public Library.

 

  • Doing Jewish: A Story from Ghana will screen at the Albany Avenue branch of the Hartford Public Library (1250 Albany Avenue), 6 pm.  They say: “A young Canadian filmmaker undergoes a transformative spiritual journey in the most unlikely of places in Doing Jewish: A Story From Ghana. Gabrielle Zilkha had little interest in religion when she arrived in Ghana to volunteer for six months of community service, a lone Jew from Montreal awash in a sea of Christians. As the High Holidays approach, she longs to reconnect with a Jewish community and goes on a day-long trip to a remote western township in Sefwi Wiawso where, remarkably, Judaism has been practiced in isolation for centuries.” This is being shown as part of the Hartford Jewish Film Fest. There is no admission charge for this film!

 

  • Theresa Wright & Distinguished Gentlemen perform jazz, soul, and R&B at The Flying Monkey (20 Lindbergh Drive), 7-10 pm. Reservations recommended.

  • It’s Pay What You Can night at Theaterworks (233 Pearl Street), 8 pm. The Legend of Georgia McBride has this description: “He’s young, he’s broke, his landlord’s knocking at the door, and he’s just found out his wife is going to have a baby. How will Casey navigate these hardships? When the former Elvis impersonator unexpectedly becomes a successful drag queen, he begins to find answers in this splashy, music-filled comedy about finding your true voice.”

March 17

  • Intro to Burlesque: Tainted (56 Arbor Street Suite310A) is offering another session of this beginner’s class, which they describe as a chance to “explore the art of sensual dance & movement, without taking our clothes off – & also talk more about why showing our sexy side is so taboo in our society. Wear something you love, bring a prop to dance with, or borrow a boa from us!” There is a $25 registration fee for this class, offered at 1 pm; another is offered at 3:30 pm.

 

  • Asking for a Friend: This is a live (non-professional) advice show at Sea Tea Comedy Theater (15 Asylum Street). 7 pm. Tickets are $15. This tends to be a wildly popular event, so don’t wait until the last minute to get your ticket.

This is open to the public.

 

  • Twang Thursday: Listen to free, live music by Chris Ross and the North at Hog River Brewery (1429 Park Street), 7-9 pm.

  • March for Our Lives: Gather at Corning Fountain in Bushnell Park at 12:30 pm. March to the Connecticut State Capitol begins at 1 pm. Rally is expected to go until 3 pm. What is this about? In the organizers’ words, this is: “created by, inspired by, and led by students across the country who will no longer risk their lives waiting for someone else to take action to stop the epidemic of mass school shootings that has become all too familiar.”

 

  • The Gorey exhibit at the Wadsworth has led to the creation of a number of other interesting offerings there, like today’s screening of Coraline at 2 pm. General admission: $9. This movie is preceded with a tour of “Gorey’s Worlds” at 1:15

 

  • Ted Hershey Dance & Music Marathon Concert: at Charter Oak Cultural Center (21 Charter Oak Avenue), 7-10 pm. They say that this event “features dance companies, choreographers and schools in a signature celebration of Hartford’s rich, culturally diverse dance community. It celebrates the life and work of Ted Hershey, principal dancer with Hartford Ballet and co-founder of Works Contemporary Dance, who died of AIDS in 1998.”  Tickets are $10-25.

  • Journalist Muira McCammon will give a talk on “how digital technologies have transformed the narratives of Americanness, security, and defense coming out of one of the world’s most inaccessible and controversial prisons, Guantánamo Bay.” This begins at 4:15 pm  in Hallden Hall’s Dangremond Family Commons at Trinity College.   • Voices of Wisdom: Newcomer Stories: from 5-8 pm at Connecticut Historical Society (1 Elizabeth Street). The Connecticut Cultural Heritage Arts Program says that this “interactive event will illuminate the journeys, struggles and achievements of immigrants and refugees making new lives in Connecticut, through storytelling, art, music, and dance. We believe that this interaction is a very good way to break down barriers of understanding. Eight speakers from groups and countries such as Burmese Karen, Somali Bantu, Mexico, St. Lucia, Nepal, Ethiopia, Syria, and Cote d’Ivoire will share personal narratives showing how they have overcome difficulties of adapting to a totally new culture through resilience and creativity, becoming good neighbors and pursuing careers and artistic activities that benefit us all. Speakers will use a 10-minute storytelling format to highlight a particular touchstone moment that expresses their joy, frustration, achievement, or dreams as they make new lives in our city. Often newcomers ‘fly under the radar’ of society, and they may be stereotyped as economically disadvantaged, users of public assistance, and challenged by lack of English and knowledge of how to ‘fit in.’ Our presentation will highlight the skills that refugees and immigrants bring with them to America, and the contributions they are making as artists, musicians, performers, and cultural leaders.” Admission is free, but rsvp: rsvp@chs.org
