Wonderful photos of our extended neighborhood. How I love this area.
Photo 19 of Tempolo Sion Pentecostal, formerly St Paul’s Methodist Church has a very special meaning to the QLGBT communities exploration of ourstories. It was here that the first services, coffeehouse, gay switchboard, planning for rallies, vigils and demonstrations, the MCC News later the Metroline and consciousness raising groups were held from 1973-1978 by the fledgling congregation of the Metropolitan Community Church. The newly formed congregation used the Christian Education Building at 11 Amity Street until the property was purchased by a Pentecostal group and MCC kicked out. In June 2015 I had the honor of interviewing F. Jay Deacon the first pastor and early gay rights activist along with Nick Carbone about those early days in Hartford of not only the QLGBT community but the city as a whole for our QLGBT archives housed at CCSU.
Back in the day the dump shown in photo #5 was a striptease joint. We went there once for a drink & it was quite the place. Then it was a church in several iterations, but, once again, abandoned.
Next time you go by the custom helmets place, look for the little cat who sometimes sits in the window. She lives there & is taken c/o by the staff.
I remember that strip joint too. It was called Teezers. Trouble should have been its name. Lots of action there with fights, stabbings, shootings, a murder, never mind drugs, the hot strippers lap dancing and horny men.
After Teezes was closed a church bought the property to get rid of the “Sin”. How we laughed at that one. What did the church ladies find stuffed in the cracks? There was a lot of that church buying porno shops, strip joints and other “unholy” places back then. (this was happening all over the country) One of the hottest bookstores in Manchester and one in Middletown met the same fate and the guys had to find a new place to cruise.

I had no idea what it was before a church! Thanks for sharing.
