The Sport and Medical Sciences Academy hosted convocation on Monday.’Convocation’ is a fancy word for ‘professional pep rally.’ All the district teachers come together to be given the uplifting messages needed before entering another year.
The school reserved prime parking, and it was not for teachers schlepping classroom supplies into the building, upsetting some of the faculty and staff. It was also not an expanded handicapped parking area. This is far from the first time any of the schools have created designated parking, but those not happy about it pointed out the irony of how equity has received extra attention from the district over this last year.
With close to 2,000 educators in attendance, some arriving on school bus, the whole parking situation was described by another in attendance as a “cluster eff.” Given the number of large lots, including the one by Dillon Stadium, and available on-street parking in this typically less congested area, it seems some of Monday’s frustrations could have been prevented.
