Residents and stakeholders learned on Friday at the Livable and Sustainable Neighborhoods Initiative meeting firm numbers on how many graffiti complaints had been filed from 2012-2014: 97 in the south district, 72 in central district, 41 in west, 11 in north, and 1 for I-91.
According to one resident, those creating the New Britain-to-Hartford Busway had not anticipated the way that miles of concrete walls would be susceptible to tagging.
Many of the reported tags are on utility boxes around Hartford. It was suggested that instead of residents having to report on these before the City can act on it, Knox being given the go-ahead to just buff out the paint.
MECA, not present at the meeting, has just today posted a call for artists to submit design proposals that could be used to transform utility boxes into more vibrant parts of the urban landscape.

Too much art on every corner may lead to insanity or visual overload. So have I got this right? Send in an application, follow the man’s guidelines and do your art on the box. (outside the box, ha ha)
Now some would say artists have already done their art on the box and some would say it’s not. Man what I have seen in my travels where artists have done their job on these boxes is more of an eyesore. One thing remains certain beware of the penis painter for he may be anywhere.
Now may I say WHAT!! “According to one resident, those creating the New Britain-to-Hartford Busway had not anticipated the way that miles of concrete walls would be susceptible to tagging.”
Again I have to ask, as over and over, who is running the show around here. Free large walls for art, of course! Only fools or folks who are out of touch would not realize that. Perhaps we need to hire artists to cover those walls, oh wait artists are already trying.

As someone who lives in a house with one of these boxes on my property, do I get a say about the proposed art work? I know I’ve scrubbed off tags in more than one instance.

All I know about the artwork is what is in that image.

I sent the department an email directly and they said they’ll only be doing this on boxes on Franklin Ave. Would probably be a good idea to specify that in the marketing piece.

Thanks for the update!
I asked MECA on Facebook earlier today and received no response.

Free art! I love Hartford for its vibrant graffiti art. One of the reasons I live here and not a boring suburb.
