Saying that she hopes these girls fill leadership positions in City Hall a few years down the road, Councilperson Cynthia Jennings presented the Wilson-Gray YMCA girls’ basketball team with a citation at the start of Monday’s City Council meeting.
Head Coach Monique Biggs (pictured far left) said the team had a 39-5 record for the 2012-2013 season. She said the 11-14-year-old girls traveled from Massachusetts to Washington D.C. for games.
This girls’ team is still fresh, with only two seasons completed.
Terra, 12, said she has played both seasons with the team, but before that she played for a “boys’ team.” Her coach at the time let her know about this new option. Terra said the team is “fun” and that everybody’s “nice.”
Geana, a 13-year-old point guard, said she plays basketball because “I love it. It’s what I do best.”
Biggs said that one aim of the team is to teach and strengthen leadership skills.
The next season begins in the fall.
