Modified street signs. Objects with re-imagined uses. Portraits merged with brain scans. A family collage.
This is some of what the ten youth participating in the SNAP! Photography Studio produced and have on display at the Wadsworth Atheneum.
Within five weeks, the teens from various towns and schools, were given lessons in photography, then sent out to get to work. And by work, yes, they received stipends.
The ten youth apprentices were chosen from over 90 initial applicants to this Neighborhood Studios Program, hosted by The Amistad Center for Arts & Culture.
Caleb Portfolio and Molly McGuire led the artists in creating a darkroom and working with studio lighting. They were given the theme “free style” to guide them in creating their work.
Youth participating this year include Andrea Angell, Council Redpath Brandon, Francisco J. Chang, Melissa Corcoran, Victoria Devin, Sara Gershman, Collette Alexandria Grimes, Diomand Alexis Henry, Olivia LaCasse, and Samantha A. Moore.
The opening reception, featuring a few words by Cathy Malloy, was held at the beginning of the month. You can see their work on display in The Hartford Courant Room in the Wadsworth Atheneum through August 9, 2013.
