These horses reside in the North East neighborhood, which is commonly referred to as the “North End,” an amorphous region that almost never appears on the news unless there is violence.
The Hartford Police Department Mounted Unit and the Ebony Horsewomen both keep their horses in this neighborhood when they are not needed elsewhere.
Keney Park is Hartford’s largest park, with a total of 693.64 acres; 110 of those acres are actually in Windsor.
In Your Neighborhood is a weekly photo series showcasing Hartford’s neighborhoods.

It was suggested once to a member of the equestrian team at a certain liberal arts college in Hartford that they might forge an association with the Ebony Horsewomen so as to keep the team horses relatively nearby in Hartford. The person doing the suggesting received an icy stare as though he were out of his mind.

Thanks for sharing this!
Sounds about on par for that certain liberal arts college.

Juan and I take the dogs for long walks up Vine Street and through the park, where you suddenly feel that you’re way out in the country. Or buy hearty dinners at MacGregors on Albany Ave, reminding me of memories of Jamaica from when I was a kid. We strongly considered buying a home on Westland Street and have kicked ourselves for years for not going for it. North Hartford (Clay Hill, North East, Blue Hills, and Upper Albany) continues to be my favorite part of town. Thank you so much for posting these pictures.

When I was looking for a house, there were a few in this neighborhood that I had my eye on, including one up on Rosemont.

The Westland Street home abutted Keney Park on two sides… Wonderful to have the woods right outside your window.
