Residents in a Pennsylvania town where fracking has occurred learned that they are able to ignite their drinking water. If that sounds alarming, you may be interested in checking out the free screening of Gasland tonight at La Paloma Sabanera (405 Capitol Avenue) at 7pm.

So glad this is being screened. My hometown is smack-dab in the middle of the Marcellus Shale, so the issue is pretty important to me. I’ve wanted to see the film since its release, as I try to balance my general dislike of NIMBY-ism and my environmentalist proclivities and love of the beauty of my home. I also struggle with opinions that natural gas, while not being as clean as true alternative-energies like solar, wind, and hamster-wheel, is slightly better than oil or coal (be it “clean” or otherwise) and, if handled properly, could provide a major economic boost to a region that has struggled mightily for two decades.
Very excited for this.

It was definitely worth watching, though some things could have been done better — less banjo playing, more comparisons with mountaintop removal (or perhaps any acknowledgement of that), and interviews with those who might have had other perspectives…though it did show how he did attempt to talk with someone from one of the company’s.
