Gil Scott-Heron‘s 40+ year career ended with his death in late May 2011. His work influenced artists like Michael Franti and Talib Kweli, along with countless others.
On Friday evening, before a standing room only audience, over a dozen performers — dancers, vocalists, poets, musicians, and even an artist — took to the stage in the Hollander Building downtown.
Performers included Assad Jackson, Kalinatha Colin Baker, Lenise NuNuu Smith, Margaux Hayes, Olusanya Bey, Richard A McGhee III, Self Suffice, Frederick-Douglass Knowles III, Mellissa Noluthando Craig, John Boiano, and David Goya Gonzalez.
The performance space is currently being used by HartBeat Ensemble; the entrance is on High Street. HartBeat Ensemble and Center Without Walls worked together to make this event happen.
