This time, it looks like it’s really going to happen.
On Friday, 300 people attended a job fair at The Market at Hartford 21, and the search for full- and part-time employees continues today. There are 75 positions open at this much-anticipated (by some) food store in Downtown.
Unlike other attempts to get something started in the space, this one appears to be about to become reality. Shelving and fixtures were visible from the street and graphics had been applied to the windows.
When Al’s Market and Deli opened at 241 Asylum Street last summer, many residents expressed excitement about the prospect of being able to get food every day of the week and late into the evening. With the opening of The Market at Hartford 21 only — according to Google Maps — an eleven second walk away from this existing market, one wonders what will become of Al’s once the upscale grocery opens.
The new market is slated to open around the Ides of March.
UPDATE: (17 March 2011) Review of newly-opened Market at Hartford 21

excellent news.. one has to wonder what the hold up was for three years while the store was vacant..
Kerri Provost
Right? It’s not like they’re trying to put in a Prada or Versace store. Even in a bad economy, people gotta eat!
Ashley E.
If someone was unable to attend the fair but would like to submit a resume or application how would they go about that?
Kerri Provost
Good question. In any of the articles on this, I’ve found no information about how to contact them. Hartford 21, the building the market is in, has a website: http://www.hartford21.com/12/Hartford-CT-Apartments/ Perhaps if you call their number they can redirect you. I’m sure others are wondering about this too.
Greg
This WFSB article notes, “For more information, applicants were told to email krista@themarket21.”
Unfortunately they’re missing whether it’s a .com, .net, or something else after the dot. I’d start with .com.
Here’s the article:

I hope it helps. I’m excited about finally having a market downtown!!!
Luis
Greg is right. The flyer passed along had krista@themarket21.COM as a contact.
Richard
Now what does upscale mean as far as a market is concerned?
It will be interesting to note if either are still in business in a year or so. Aren’t these types of stores nice to run in for something, I don’t feel like cooking tonight, grab something to eat, or have a product I can’t find elsewhere(?)not where one would do their weekly shopping. The car still rules and things are cheaper at Stop and Shop etc.
Don’t get me wrong I am so happy for all the upscale folks who live in upscaleville Hartford that now they have a place to upscale shop. A most welcome addition to their lives.

It’s nice to see a downtown vacant storefront being used for something, even if I think a shoe store would be nicer.
Brendan
We got lots of shoe stores.
What kind of shoes are you looking for that you can find downtown?
Kerri Provost
Hot shoes, duh.
Betsy Johnson, for starters.

Also, I’d like the money to buy them with and a place to wear them to.
Brendan
We’ve got an ordinance banning the sale of those. I guess it’s Blue Back Square for you!
These are now the official shoes of Hartford: http://abledata.com/product_images/images/09A0193.jpg

How am I supposed to ride my bike wearing those?
stacey myers

Stacey,
You might get a better answer by trying to contact the Market 21 folks directly. You might try emailing: krista@themarket21.COM
Good luck!
