Latin Roots, the free outdoor concert series, will continue on June 26th with a performance by Lorena Garay and Surcari. Garay is described as a “Classical, Spanish, and Latin guitarist.” The concert will begin at 6pm on the lawn at 539 Broad Street. If it rains, the concert will be moved indoors to The Studio.
On Saturday July 10th, David Gonzalez and the Latin Jazz Experience will be performing at the same venue, also starting at 6pm.
The first in this series was a performance by the Alturas Duo with David MacBride. Before each song they explained what the instruments were or gave background information that helped the audience to understand the music better. The final piece in that performance was called “No Más Muertes!” — a three part composition that explores death by dehydration, which is a danger that many illegal immigrants face when crossing from Mexico into the United States. The composition was inspired by Luis Alberto Urrea’s book, The Devil’s Highway.
