Shag Frenzy has changed venues often, but they’ve finally moved to a place I won’t go: Middletown.
The free monthly dance party has been held at places like the Webster Underground, Sweet Jane’s, and most recently, The Warehouse. Part of the charm, for me, was that dancing was the focus. Not drinking (people drink, but it never seemed like I was surrounded by underage kids binge drinking). It wasn’t a meat market (aside from the very occasional slimy guy, it was mainly a place for friends to have fun). I’ve never run into my students there. Super bonus points for places that my students don’t go.
I was saddened to find out that they are taking their production to Middletown; another charm of Shag Frenzy was that I could walk there. The routine for me had been to have dinner at Barca first and then go across the street to dance. Being local, it was easy to find rides home for friends who might have taken the bus to get there. Walking down Park Street at night and seeing people still out reminded me that folks always look in the wrong places for signs of life in Hartford. It’s here, trust me.
Their Facebook event posting had this explanation:
I wrote a bunch of stuff to explain why we’re moving and then Firefox crashed.
In short…
We’re moving to Middletown because we have a baby coming soon and want to be closer to home.
The new place is more intimate so get there early for drink specials and don’t be left outside in the queue.
Thanks to Hartford and The Warehouse for the fun.
Business as usual…no cover, 3rd Saturday of the month, dancing, drinking, debauchery, noise, lust, fun.
XOXO
Derek & Sara
Thanks…it’s been fun.
