Ever since I learned that Hartford buried parts of rivers underground, I’ve been a little obsessed with finding them. Yesterday, I got to see where one disappears. This is in the Farmington Avenue / Woodland Street area. The river basically goes below the field next to apartments which are not far from the Mark Twain House.
As you can see, this is really clogged with leaves and other debris.
The top of the concrete structure is a surface parking lot for apartment buildings on Farmington Avenue.
These photos were taken from a parking lot off of Woodland Street.
The final photo was taken from a bridge on Asylum Avenue. The water was much cleaner just a few blocks away. Maybe in a few months I’ll have photos from inside of Hartford.

Going inside is really awesome, but it is much more easily done from the other entrance in Pope Park. If you look at a satellite map on google you’ll see the entry point just between the park and the highway.
You can see a few of the pictures I’ve taken from inside the river at my website: http://www.teamcrowbar.com/words/b3.html
Good luck!
