The In Your Neighborhood series involves visiting the different areas of Hartford on an average day; if we come across events, fine, but we do not seek out a place because there is a parade happening or some kind of crime scene.
The other restriction is that the photographs must be taken while on foot or bicycle.
During this visit to a “North End” neighborhood, there was little in the way of “excitement.” Even the fat pitbull we saw sleeping in a driveway was too calm and content to perk his ears up as we passed by. He found a spot in the sun and was not about to move for anything.
It may not always be like this, but sometimes, it is.
The uphill battle in explaining urban crime involves teaching, constantly, and repeating the message that designations like “north end” are too vague to be useful. Regular browsing of the arrest log shows patterns. Certain streets and addresses pop up nearly every day. Other streets never appear.

The truth is that most of the “North End” is quiet, residential neighborhoods. And it has the best park in the City (sadly neglected). As a white guy, I get the impression that folks in the various neighborhoods comprising the “North End” wonder what I’m doing there; that said, no one ever bothers me when I take my walks. A favorite is up Vine Street to Holcomb, then south via Ridgefield. Beautiful homes, quiet park, get a patty on the way home.
