After Mayor Segarra was gently teased for promoting bicycling without getting on his bike, Pedro rose to the challenge. This morning he showed up at the Old State House on his bicycle, complete with helmet and bright orange jacket for visibility.
Not riding regularly, he described himself as feeling nervous on the ride in, reenacting how he had to look in all directions. He told other cyclists at the Bike to Work Breakfast that being on his bike gave him a different perspective of the city, as there were no barriers.
His experience made him want to get the police more engaged. Segarra said motorists need to be more friendly.
Chatting with cyclists, he spoke of a Back to School initiative he’d like to see that would make motorists more aware of cyclists and children with whom they need to share the road.
Bike to Work is sponsored by Bike Walk Connecticut, the organization behind the Discover Hartford Tour taking place on September 29, 2012.

So glad to have Mayor Segarra show up ‘en bicicleta’! Much different than East Hartford’s Mayor Leclerc dropping by via SUV. It’s not just politics for Segarra.
The t-shirts the city designed and donated were awesome and will be worn as billboards by the bike commuters of Greater Hartford.
