The City of Hartford has been awarded a $1,372,700 block grant which is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant is slated to be used to expand the single-stream recycling program. Currently the recyclables-for-rewards program — RecycleBank — is not citywide. The block grant will also help to fund the replacement of current traffic signals with LED ones. Likewise, “ineffective street lamps” will be replaced by energy efficient ones.
Funds will also be used to make “schools, libraries, firehouses, and government buildings more energy efficient.” May I suggest that the buildings start by choosing a more reasonable setting for their air conditioners and shutting the a/c off in the dead of winter?
There are plans to use funds for energy efficiency and conservation programs for elementary school children.
The City’s GreenUp Hartford page does not have details yet. To find out about other ARRA grants, see the Hartford Recovery page.
